Henry L. Cuthbert joined the Office of University Counsel in May of 2007. Mr. Cuthbert is responsible for issues relating to internet/computer law; privacy (FERPA); municipal law; intellectual property such as copyright, ownership issues and licensing; study abroad; export control; and contracts. Prior to his employment with Duke, he served as senior legal counsel for the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1989-2007.
Mr. Cuthbert is a past President of the National Association of College and University Attorneys, a national professional bar association for higher education lawyers. He served on NACUA’s governing Board of Directors for twelve years and has chaired or served on numerous committees or task forces over the past two decades.
Mr. Cuthbert received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Law in 1983 and a B.A. in Slavic Languages and Linguistics from Lawrence University in 1975. Mr. Cuthbert is admitted to the Wisconsin and Minnesota Bars.
He was born in Darien, Georgia and is an accomplished marathoner. In addition to running, he enjoys biking, tennis, reading and traveling with his wife.
